We bought our new flock just before Easter, so it'll be awhile before we start seeing any PeeWees around here. ;)
Was the jumbo a double-yolk? I had a double-yolk layer who laid one pretty consistently - so much fun!

Sounds like your philosophical evolution is happening...isn't something how living closer to the land really gets you thinking?

Take good care,
TeriTeri @ Love From the Farmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12230867957028118490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7812128414310678524.post-32780861450993637122011-08-16T17:33:26.075-07:002011-08-16T17:33:26.075-07:00Mike --- that was awesome. Your dad sounds as if he was blesed with lots of wisdom to pass long.

I agree with you about Sam's time-frame...that was a time when the head-honchos really cared about every voice, not just the loudest voice. I remember walking to our local grocery store to buy candy and the owner was there daily and knew everyone's name in town who went to his business. Of course, they were shut down by bigger chains. I guess I am part of the problem because we do shop based on prices and consumer loyalty is just not the same any more. My daughter worked at the Walmart pharmacy this past year and loved it. She had nothing but good things to say about Walmart, but now she's working with her Biology degree in a research lab running tests, etc. for fertility specialists. I guess my kids' generation is a Walmart generation...I just hope they know that big business is not always the answer.

But, in Livingston...years ago, when they were putting in the Walmart, everyone was so excited because they knew it would draw in more businesses. It's the way of the world now.

Still, I want to do as that piece of paper that you have says to do, I want to know how to be as sustainable as possible. The older I get, the more I'm willing to work at it. I'm not sure if this is backwards or the feelings of other people as well?

I am also thinking about your chickens. Am eager to find out if you end up with a rooster. Out of our 7 chickens, two were roosters. I miss those guys, but they were a tad mean and VERY LOUD. They were blowing the whistle on us in the neighborhood and had to go. :-)Lana from Farm Life Lessonshttp://www.farmlifelessons.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7812128414310678524.post-76127342777015472732011-08-16T15:34:26.794-07:002011-08-16T15:34:26.794-07:00Lana - Years and years ago my father gave me a typ...Lana - Years and years ago my father gave me a type written note. (from a real typewriter) that said:

Never pay somebody for something you can do yourself. If you don't know how, learn.

Unfortunately, time and erosion took it's toll on that small piece of paper and I no longer, physically have it. However, I've kept those words with me ever since and try to live by them, daily.

And yes, Sam definitely cut some throats. I was merely comparing HIS time to the CORPORATE's time.

By shopping around I can beat Walmart's everyday price and I find myself moving further and further from it's grasp and it really feels pretty darn good.Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11878152240514975518noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7812128414310678524.post-64696892707740757122011-08-16T14:37:20.977-07:002011-08-16T14:37:20.977-07:00Mike...you know I do the same thing. And I think W...Mike...you know I do the same thing. And I think Walmart represents city living, everything conveniently located in one store and I do love Walmart. However, it's my dependence on stores that I sure would love to decrease. I do think corporations become less about people because it becomes departments (finance, legal, marketing, etc.) that run the business and the individuals behind the scenes get lost. Sam Walton was a genious. But, I think he had a few ruthless bones in his body to get that far, especially with his corner store competition that taught him loads. I admire his achievements. I know we all get lower prices because of mass products, but sometimes the other price we pay, putting the small man out of business, etc. is also a high price to pay.

And, yes, I do think a tractor is sexy! haha...and peaceful...and like a meditation zone and I must be weird cause I like big working machinery and just want to learn how to do it all by myself! Just so I can say I can, then Deputy Dave can take the reins again.Lana from Farm Life Lessonshttp://www.farmlifelessons.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7812128414310678524.post-3120144231945933592011-08-16T13:12:52.700-07:002011-08-16T13:12:52.700-07:00Everytime I read one of your philosophical posts I...Everytime I read one of your philosophical posts I find my mind wandering here and there.

I think Walmart is a good example of your corporate/farmer explanation. Sam Walton cared about what he sold and wanted it to be quality merchandise at a reasonable price. Today, 40 years later, Corporate doesn't give a rat's basket about what it sells or how much they charge. They want the money.

And lastly to quote Kenny Chesney: She thinks my tractors' sexy...Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11878152240514975518noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7812128414310678524.post-35865648404033862032011-08-16T10:57:30.173-07:002011-08-16T10:57:30.173-07:00AMEN SISTER AMEN
